OUR FOUNDATION

In 2010 the Muskegon Environmental Research & Education Society (MERES) looked around and could not find a Hall of Fame for those people and organizations that had been long time supporters of the environment. Thus was born the Michigan Environmental Hall of Fame.

OUR MISSION

Its purpose is to recognize people and organizations, both locally and on a statewide basis, that have made significant contributions to our environment over the years. We recognize individuals who are making contributions each day and those who have passed on after making their contribution. We also like to recognize non-profit organizations that are dedicated to preserving our environment. We also select an environmental project that has made significant gains in changing the environment for the good of us all. Each year at our induction ceremony we have a speaker that addresses some aspect of our environment.

The Muskegon Environmental Research & Education Society (MERES)

The Muskegon Environmental Research & Education Society (MERES) was formed as an outgrowth of the Muskegon Conservation Club. When the club acquired land that was to become the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve in 1997, it was a community dump. With the help of generous contributors and many hours of volunteer labor, this dump was gradually converted to a beautiful natural setting.

The Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve has been host to nearly 2,000 kids in one year studying wetlands and forest environmental issues. Muskegon Area Intermediate School Districts are primarily those in attendance. The Preserve comes to life each spring as hundreds of bird species pass through or nest, turtles lay their eggs, the water fills with invertebrates waiting to be discovered, and the trees and flowers are start a new year.

There is small charge for the educational programs at the Preserve, but there are often scholarships for classrooms which find it difficult to pay the fee. Because times are limited, it is important to register your group as soon as possible.
